Jub Jub

Posted by Rose at 4:21am on Wednesday the 12th of March, 2008

Ambrose would probably not like me saying this but this site is for us so here it goes.  Not many people know Amby to be an animal lover, but he was one in spades.  When we lived with my father in Redding, we had two pet rats:  Jub Jub and Nevile.  Jub Jub was Ambrose's rat.  Julie had Nevile.  Ambrose was so in love with this rat, he adored him.  But one day Jub Jub fell too hard and we had to put him to sleep.  Ambrose cried very hard after that, and with his sensitivity he tried to give the apperance of hardening his heart to animals.  Then Nevile died, and we found Ambrose crying in our apartment alone with Julie's dead rat.  He tried to place such a tough exterior on his emotions, but he could not hide his good heart.  Ambrose was extremely sensitive.  What I want people to remember was his big heart, his eccentricities, and his sensitivity.

Ambrose Consoles a Directionless Man

Posted by Rose Breen at 3:25am on Wednesday the 12th of March, 2008

I have many many stories about my brother Ambrose.  With my memory, I have to jot down every one when they spring up, before I forget.

Ambrose lived with me about two summers ago in Arcata.  He was an excellent pool player, so we would go to the Plaza Bars looking for fools to smoke in pool.  I met this guy, Ryan Estes (it's amazing the name still sticks) who actually beat Amby.  But it turns out he was in tournaments and was near professonal).  I always stuck up for my brother, and he always stuck up for me- always- so I took Amby's pool stick and made a wild swing at this fellow's head.  I missed.  Then I asked him to lets, "Take it outside" to defend Amby's honor since he lost.

Ambrose and I ended up bringing that guy home.  While I slept soundly in my bedroom, Amby was kept up all night by this redneck pool playing extrodanare.  He cried to Ambrose all night about how, "He did not know what he was doing with his life..." but "He really liked" his sister- poor me.

The next morning, after comforting this burrly mountain man all night, Amby said, "Oh Rose, that guy was nice and all, but lets not have him come back, okay?"  Ambrose gave this stranger motivational advice all night, while he cried to Amby.  I think all Amby wanted to do was sleep.

This is just one example of how we, as brother and sister, tried to stick up for each other and it went terribly wrong.  I love the man.

The Breen charm

Posted by Ami at 2:41am on Wednesday the 12th of March, 2008

I met Amby when he was fifteen. He came to live with Simon and me in what was my first adult apartment. Before I met him, I learned that he had actually turned green one time from lack of sunshine due to video game exposure so I had high expectations that Amby would be someone with whom I could share many a lazy Sunday. I was right. We developed a nothing but pickle chips eating disorder together that we sought help for after finding ourselves on all fours eating the pickles out of broken glass after dropping our last jar. I can still see Simon shaking his head at the sight of our mess, as we couldn't be bothered to put our trash in the appropriate receptacle. Little did Simon know that as soon as the door would shut behind him mockery would ensue, fingers wagging as Ambrose and I snickered. Something that I will always remember about Ambrose, and think of often, is the way he could pull off some crazy scheme that should only work and should only be funny if it were in a movie. Real life people don't usually get away with chasing boys out of their sister's apartment with a paint ball gun while wearing an orange trench coat for effect. I have to assume it was the Breen charm that allowed for so much slack. That coupled with his sweetness and smile.
